Literacy Awareness Week was a huge hit!
On Thursday, our students explored blackout poetry — a creative activity where they transformed pages of text into original poems by blacking out all but a few powerful words or phrases.
The result? Some truly moving and imaginative creations that captured their voices in unexpected ways.
We love seeing our Cyclones embrace reading and writing with such enthusiasm!
#CycloneNation #WestPrairieProud

Mr. Rogers took math outdoors—literally bringing geometry to life. Students used similar triangles and proportional reasoning to determine the height of tall objects like the flagpole and light posts without climbing them. Students first measured their own height and shadow length, then measured the shadow length of the taller object. By setting up a proportion, they solved for the unknown height of the flagpole or light post. This hands-on activity gave students a clear, real-world example of how geometry and ratios are used to solve practical measurement problems—no ladder required!

Literacy Awareness Week: Celebrating Stories!
On Wednesday, our Cyclones took time to celebrate the power of storytelling. Students wrote down their favorite stories and shared a quick reason why those stories have stuck with them — from childhood classics to the novels that changed their perspectives.
Each student added their “story sticker” to a collaborative poster, beautifully designed by Ms. DeGraaf, which now hangs proudly in our central hall.
It’s a colorful reminder that every reader has a story — and every story connects us.
#CycloneNation #WestPrairieProud

Literacy Awareness Week Fun Continues!
Today’s activity — “Quote Match” — had our Cyclones reading, reminiscing, and racing to connect famous lines with the books they came from! Students loved spotting quotes they recognized from their past reads, and the energy in the room was electric.
One standout moment? When “Stay gold, Ponyboy” entered the lineup — our upperclassmen instantly lit up, sharing memories of reading The Outsiders back in 7th grade.
High engagement, big smiles, and a whole lot of book love — that’s what Literacy Awareness Week is all about!
#CycloneNation #WestPrairieProud

Cyclone Readers Rock! A huge shoutout to all the students who crushed our September Reading Challenge!
You didn’t just meet the goal—you blew it away!
These reading Cyclones celebrated in true West Prairie style with pizza, milkshakes, and first dibs on our brand-new collection of award-winning Caudill and Lincoln books.
And now… it’s time to announce our next big adventure in reading! Illinois Teen Readers’ Choice Reading Challenge
Who: Any student in grades 7–12 who reads and conferences on at least 3 books from the Lincoln Award Nominee List and/or the Rebecca Caudill Award Nominee List.
When: October 2025 – February 15, 2026
Students who successfully meet this challenge will be invited to our exclusive West Prairie Voting Party for the Illinois Teen Readers’ Choice Awards! Let’s keep the pages turning, Cyclones — the next story could be your favorite yet!

Happy birthday to our Physical Education Teacher, Ian Conkling! West Prairie is so lucky to have you!

West Prairie Volleyball celebrated our amazing grandparents at Monday night’s game versus Unity! Grandparents are often our biggest fans—always cheering the loudest, supporting the hardest, and reminding us what true Cyclone pride looks like. Thank you for being there for our athletes on and off the court! #CycloneNation #WestPrairieProud

A huge thank you to the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office, David Burnham, and the Colchester Fire Department for spending time with our Drivers Ed class.
Students experienced the impact of impaired driving by wearing “fatal vision goggles,” participating in a field sobriety test, and navigating a driving course under the simulation. Hands-on lessons like this make a lasting impression—thank you for helping keep our Cyclones safe!

West Prairie Southeastern Cyclones JV Football brought the storm tonight, powering past the West Central Heat with a strong 20-8 victory!
